About the Performance

Epicenter Theatre Group presents Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet, directed by Steven O'Brien and presented by special arrangement with Samuel French. Showdates are June 3-5 & 10-12, 2011. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8:00 pm and Sunday shows begin at 1:00 pm & 5:00 pm at Oakland University's Varner Hall Studio Theatre.

This scalding comedy took Broadway and London by storm and won the 1984 Pulitzer Prize. Here is Mamet at his very best, writing about small-time, cutthroat real estate salesmen trying to grind out a living by pushing plots of land on reluctant buyers in a never-ending scramble for their share of the American dream. Epicenter Theatre Group encourages people to come and experience this dark comedy and feel the tension and utter desperation of Glengarry Glen Ross's complex characters.

Glengarry Glen Ross, a play by David Mamet and produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, will be presented by Epicenter Theatre Group at the Varner Hall Studio Theatre located on the campus of Oakland University. Performances are Friday June 3, Saturday June 4, Sunday June 5 and the following week Friday June 10, Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12. Director's Notes: "Glengarry Glen Ross" - Written by David Mamet and Directed by Steven O'Brien by special arrangement with Samuel French.

Glengarry Glen Ross is a slice of life which many, I believe, will relate to. People being people striving to rise. Fighting to flourish in a Man eat Man Dog eat Dog World. In every group there comes a set of ethics, each individual holds his or hers, and the group establishes and evolves their own as well. Glengarry Glen Ross offers a very powerful take on "men" and human nature.

There is incredible dissection that can happen with the life of these characters and the world of this play. Their issues make great, charged and memorable entertainment. Working with this company allows a collaborative group to take a step towards creating theatre and a entertainment that begins to animate theatrical works and provide theatrical experiences that I hope will transcend and ever strive to raise what is possible. Both in our productions and how they influence and affect our audiences. To harness and give life to the true "Magic" of theatre for a world, its people, and a society that has amazing entertainment value, while also forwarding our consideration for what and who we are as people is a heavy but worthwhile pursuit.

Our standard entertainment mediums today are movies, television, internet, etc. With these mediums as the 'norm', theatre must then further develop its unique offerings. Theatre is Live, A living, breathing "experience". The energetic, emotional, physiological happenings and exchanges between audience members, performers, the unique atmosphere and reality that are commonly shared within the "sacred" space and "experience" of theatre during a performance must find new heights and reach new levels of radiation. This raises the challenge for us as a company and as artists to make theatre relevant to people and requires exceptional savvy. We will do this, and we are pleased to have you here as it is only with you and for you that our medium has life.

I personally encourage you to provide us with your feedback and experience of your evening with us. Send me a letter, handwritten or emailed. Give us a call and leave us a message. Endow us with your financial backing. Tell people about us and implore them to go!

Thank you for joining us. We look forward to having you back for our upcoming season. Enjoy Glengarry Glen Ross.

Artistic Director's Letter:

It is with pleasure that I welcome you to the inaugural production of Epicenter Theatre Group. Glengarry Glen Ross is a powerful play with a powerful message performed by a powerful cast, director and crew made up of friends. What could be better than working with friends and discovering the many facets of this work by David Mamet. We all sell, to varying degrees, from nurses trying to convince a patient to take his/her pills, a teenager trying to convince his parents to let him throw a party or a lawyer trying to convince a jury that his client is innocent. But selling land, on commission, in Florida, is another story. Look for the greed, panic, survival instinct and all the rest. Please sit back and absorb Glengary Glen Ross.
