Not unlike many Michigan residents, Marco made the most of his job opportunities at the time, joining the family business to work alongside brother, Tonino Zaccagnini. After his five year hiatus from theatre, the call of the stage resurfaced, and Marco envisioned a new theatre company. Next he approached Bill Premin with the idea and Premin (now VP and Artistic Director of Epicenter) shared Marco's enthusiasm for the project instantly. Together they began reconnecting with fellow thespians to launch the Epicenter Theatre Group.
A board of eight diverse, talented, individuals that shared a vision of creating a theatre group showcasing regional theatrical talent was assembled. The group brings multiple perspectives and experiences to live theatre, and they plan to involve other members of the regions theatre community as well.
Stefan Mantyk, Technical Director and Epicenter Board Member, recognized a void in Michigan theatre and hopes to create opportunities for local talent. Steven O'Brien, General Manager and Epicenter Board Member, was drawn by the mystique and professionalism in the group's members. Communications Director, Marius Iliescu, brings a unique Eastern European flair to the team. Paul Jagoda, Epicenter's Scenic Design Director, offers creativity, artistic vision and architectural experience to bring each set to life. Many of the groups' members graduated from Oakland University.
Marco is looking forward to the success of Epicenter, and hopes to inspire and provide opportunities for current and future students of Oakland University who seek to pursue an education/career in the performing arts. The Epicenter plans not only produce professional quality theatre, but to share proceeds from the group's endeavors to Oakland University's various programs in the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance.
The group anticipates performing a range of plays like: Death of a Salesman, The Odd Couple, Noises Off, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and The Fantasticks. The audience can expect staged readings, improvisation, sketch comedy, various theatre workshops, festivals of plays, children's and reader's theatre. Glengarry Glen Ross is Epicenter's first production. The play was chosen in light of Michigan's current cut-throat job market and ongoing real estate crisis.
Marco plays lead, Richard Roma, who is a ruthless, fast talking salesman. Roma uses ferociousness and unwavering guerilla tactics to survive in a real estate decline. Marco and six other cast members will try to sell the American dream to reluctant buyers, in an ongoing struggle to keep their jobs. Epicenter encourages people to come and experience this dark comedy, and feel the tension and utter desperation of the complex characters in Glengarry Glen Ross.
Glengarry Glen Ross, a play by David Mamet and produced in special arrangement with Samuel French, will be presented at The Varner Hall Studio Theatre located on the campus of Oakland University. Performances are June 3rd – 5th and the following week, June 10th - 12th. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8pm and Sunday at 1pm and 5pm.
